The filmmakers behind "The Lodge" and "Goodnight Mommy," Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, are back with their bleakest film yet, "The Devil’s Bath." This German-language horror movie is set to premiere exclusively on Shudder this Friday, June 28, and promises to deliver a harrowing experience rooted in the harsh realities of the 18th century.

Plot Synopsis

Set in 1750 Austria, "The Devil’s Bath" follows Agnes, a deeply religious woman who has just married her beloved. However, her life soon becomes a relentless cycle of chores and societal expectations. As days turn into a monotonous blur, Agnes finds herself increasingly trapped in a murky and lonely path, leading to evil thoughts. The possibility of committing a shocking act of violence begins to seem like the only escape from her inner prison.

Exclusive Clip

An exclusive new clip teases the grim atmosphere of the film, showing Agnes (played by Anja Plaschg) giving chase in the woods. She stumbles upon a grisly cautionary tale for those who commit grave acts of sin, setting the tone for the emotional and psychological torment that follows.

Cinematic Excellence

Shot on 35mm film, "The Devil’s Bath" is based on historical records and made its debut at Berlinale this year, where it was awarded a Silver Bear for Martin Gschlacht’s exceptional cinematography. The film also stars David Scheid, Maria Hofstätter, Camilla Schielin, and Lorenz Tröbinger, all of whom deliver powerhouse performances that keep you deeply invested in this downward spiral.

Critical Acclaim

In my review, I noted, “That the horror stems from grim reality and historical accounts leaves no room for levity or escapism; it’s two hours of escalating suffering, building toward a horrific finale that packs a potent, somber punch. The exquisite craftsmanship and powerhouse performances keep you deeply invested in this downward spiral, but buckle up: it’s a downer of the highest order.”

Production Details

"The Devil’s Bath" is produced by Heimatfilm Productions and Ulrich Seidl Productions, in co-production with Heimatfilm and Coop99 Filmproduktion. The film’s meticulous attention to historical detail and its emotionally devastating narrative make it a must-watch for fans of intense, thought-provoking horror.
