King Spawn: Blumhouse's Dark and Gritty Adaptation Moves Forward

Hey horror fans, I've got some thrilling news to share! Earlier this week, it was announced that Blumhouse’s long-awaited movie adaptation of the Spawn comic books has finally crossed a major milestone. The script for the film, currently titled "King Spawn," is complete! This exciting project is based on characters created by the legendary Todd McFarlane, with the script crafted by the talented trio of Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman (Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and Scott Silver (Joker).

Now, I know what you're all wondering—who's going to direct this dark and gritty masterpiece? According to a fresh report from The Hollywood Reporter, Blumhouse is now on the hunt for the perfect director to bring this vision to life.

The report reveals, “King Spawn now has a completed script, one that McFarlane and producer Jason Blum’s Blumhouse have enough confidence in to start meeting with directors for the movie.” Once they find the right director, the team will then approach studio partners to get the ball rolling.

Todd McFarlane himself has teased, “Deadpool is a fun R. Something like Joker 2 is a serious R. Our movie is going to be super serious and dark and gritty. It’s going to be at times a heavy movie. If you like serious drama, with meaningful themes that are relevant and that may even reflect the world we live in, then this has a lot of those elements in it.”

"King Spawn" is set to be a “mid-budget” production and seems to have evolved into an adaptation of the King Spawn comic book storyline, which was launched by Image Comics in 2021. In this storyline, “When one of the vilest creatures ever imprisoned in Hell is released back onto Earth, Spawn follows the clues right into a trap set just for him. But why does Kincaid want Spawn to ascend the throne of Hell, and what of the prophecy of the King Spawn?”

It's been a long and winding road out of development hell for this new Spawn feature, which Todd McFarlane had originally planned to direct. Jamie Foxx was once attached to play the title character, but it's still unclear if that’s the plan moving forward. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project develops!
