The first teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife has arrived, revealing that the official title of next year’s movie is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire!
In this movie, the Spengler family returns to the iconic New York City firehouse where it all started, to team up with the original Ghostbusters. The team has developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when an ancient artifact is discovered, an evil force is unleashed, and the old and new Ghostbusters must work together to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
What sets Frozen Empire apart is that it brings the icy cold grip of winter into the warm summer months. A deadly ice storm appears in the first half of the teaser trailer, encasing the iconic Ghostbusters Firehouse in ice. “For the first time in New York history, people froze to death in the middle of July,” Patton Oswalt narrates the trailer. Dan Aykroyd is back as Ray Stantz, and he refers to the new threat as the “Death Chill.”
“The power to kill by fear itself,” he explains. “Your veins turn to rivers of ice. Your bones crack. And the last thing you see is your own tear ducts… freezing up.”
This first trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire also confirms that Bill Murray is back as Peter Venkman, alongside the returning Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore, and teases a Kaiju-sized new threat.
The upcoming sequel is directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House, Poltergeist) and produced by Jason Reitman, who directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The cast includes Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind, alongside Bill Murray, Finn Wolfhard, Ernie Hudson, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Annie Potts, Dan Aykroyd, and Carrie Coon. The current release date is March 29, 2024, pushed back from December 2023.
