Blumhouse Still Wants To Make A New FRIDAY THE 13th Movie

Blumhouse’s Ryan Turek and Jason Blum want to bring Jason Voorhees back to the big screen

It's been almost 15 years since a new Friday the 13th movie hit theaters, and as a fan of slasher films, I find that completely unacceptable. The delay has mostly been due to a legal dispute between the original screenwriter, Victor Miller, and director Sean Cunningham. However, with a Crystal Lake TV show in development for Peacock, it seems like things are finally changing. Blumhouse, the production company behind the successful Halloween trilogy, has expressed interest in bringing Jason Voorhees back to the big screen. Ryan Turek, a producer at Blumhouse, recently spoke with Inverse about their plans. He and head honcho Jason Blum are eager to take on the project and keep things simple. Turek stated that he hopes to make it happen and shared his thoughts on the matter.

“Jason [Blum] and I are definitely in agreement that Friday the 13th is the thing we would love to get our hands on. I really want to go back to the basics. You don't need too many ingredients for a Friday the 13th film. You need summer camp, you need campers, and you need Jason Vorhees in a mask. Listen, I've gone on the record saying Halloween is the ultimate slasher film for me. That's my favorite slasher film of all time. But Friday the 13th as a franchise is one that I just bow down to. I just love everything about it. And if we were able to live in both worlds, like we do with Halloween, then to be able to live at Crystal Lake for a while would be so incredible.”.

It's not the first time Turek and/or Blum have talked about targeting this franchise, but there haven't been any concrete steps taken yet. While there was some buzz about a possible Friday the 13th movie last year, it fizzled out quickly. It's hard to say if anything will come of it at this point, but with Bryan Fuller working on Crystal Lake, it feels like there's more hope than there has been in a long time. The only potential roadblock could be competition from other projects. However, given the success of the Halloween trilogy, which made almost $500 million globally, even with multiple movies being released on the same day, Blumhouse seems like a natural fit for Jason Voorhees. It's clear that there's money to be made with a new Friday the 13th movie, and eventually, it will happen. When that time comes, you can bet that Jason Blum will be on the phone making moves.
